The Magnificent Seven came out on 9/23/16 but I just got the chance to see it last weekend. Well Patriots, it was worth the wait! I loved it and can wholeheartedly recommend seeing the film. This is a remake of an old classic western that was made back in 1960 and starred Yul Brynner and had a host of famous actors as co-stars, ie Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson, to name a few. Well the remake is no slouch in that department, it stars one of my favorite actors of all time Denzel Washington as Sam Chisholm AKA the bounty hunter and leader of our band of mercenaries. He was hired by the heroine of the story played by Haley Bennett (Emma Cullen) whose husband was gunned down in cold blood by the bad-guy (Bartholomew Bogue) who is terrorizing a small western mining town.
That is the plot behind the film, a grossly outnumbered group of good-guy mercenaries take on a vastly numerically superior force commanded by Bartholomew Bogue. Sam Chisholm, after being recruited by our heroine, asks her “Ma’am do you seek Revenge”; she states “I seek righteousness but Revenge will do”! Sam begins finding his band of mercenaries starting with (Josh Faraday, the gambler) played by Chris Pratt. As they travel toward the mining town they recruit the rest of said Magnificent Seven, each with special talents that sets them off from the rest. Number 3 is (Goodnight Robiceaux the sharpshooter) played by veteran actor Ethan Hawke and his companion and one of my favorite characters because of his martial arts prowess (Billy Rocks, the assassin) played by Byung HunLee. Next up is a Bear of a man (Jack Horne, the tracker) played by Vincent D’Onofrio and runs through the bad guys largely because of his size differential. Number 6 is (Vasquez the outlaw) played by Manuel Rulfo who is a skilled pistolero that knows his way around a hog-leg and dispatches the bad-guys with skilled precision. Number 7 and last but certainly not least is (Red Harvest, Native American bad-ass bow warrior) played by Martin Sensmeier, I loved watching him handle a rattlesnake backed longbow, I am a fellow bowyer and appreciate his prowess with the bow!
This is a very good fast-paced, action-packed movie with a good storyline. My favorite line from the movie after The Magnificent Seven has dealt with Bartholomew’s army of thugs, Sam Chisholm faces down his nemesis and asks why he has terrorized these good people and he classically said “If God didn’t want these people sheared he shouldn’t have made them sheep”, what a line, that reminds me of Democrats! Then Sam Gunned him down as we all knew would happen.
Great movie in my estimation, I loved and believe you will like it also. The good-guys triumph in the end and the bad-guys take a dirt nap, it could not be a better ending!! THE MINUTEMAN
